Thomas P. Campbell
DIRECTOR, THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART
The Met has made some big announcements this year related to its newly aggressive commitment to modern and postmodern art, including plans to turn the former site of the Whitney museum, which the Met purchased, into galleries for contemporary works. Campbell also revealed that architect David Chipperfield will design an expansion to the museum that will replace, and expand the capacity of, its existing modern and contemporary wing. The event of the year, though, was of course the Met Gala, which has become a moneymaking (and celebrity-drawing) institution in its own right.
